HD-DVD vs. Blu-ray: A Battle to the End

Currently, many companies have presented options to the present DVD standard. The two major alternatives are the HD-DVD and the blu-ray. For the past several years, these two had competed and we have drawn comparisons between the two.

Advantages and Disadvantages of HD-DVD and Blu-ray

Even though, both of these formats have great advantages. One is better on aspects when it comes to capacity, compression and playback when compared to the other. Let us compare HD-DVD and Blu-ray and learn to understand their strengths and weaknesses.

Both of these formats use blue lasers and they also have the same options for video and audio compression. But blu-ray has a larger storage space. It offers a 50 GB dual layer disc. On the other hand, HD-DVD has a lesser storage space. It has 30 GB dual layer disc. When it comes to the affordability of these 2 discs, HD-DVD is more affordable than Blu-ray. HD-DVD is selling its disc for around $399 while Blu-ray sells its disc for around $ 699.

The Battle Lines

But the battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray is not yet over! They have affiliated with different companies. Microsoft, Toshiba and Intel have accepted HD-DVD as an add-on to the release of their Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 is the second and last gaming system made by Microsoft. It allows you to interact online and with HD-DVD as its optical media, it has 30 GB storage space.

However, Blu-ray has electronic companies like Apple, Dell, Sony (which plans to release the Blu-ray system furnished in their PS3) and Pioneer.

PS3 is one of the remarkable innovations of Sony in collaboration with Blu-ray disc. It has a unique multimedia feature that can be used online and with the use of Blu-ray disk as its optical media, PS3 has a larger storage space as compared to the Xbox 360. Disney as well as Fox sided with them as their board of directors.

Although Blu-ray has the more backing from the computer and entertainment industry, this doesn’t mean that the battle is already over. Hewlett-Packard, a company that has supported Blu-ray, has now sided with HD-DVD.

The battle between HD-DVD and Blu-ray is really getting bigger. But one thing I know is for sure. Both have a unique feature that really helps enhance the digital audio world. It depends on the preference of the prospective buyers in the market if they would want more storage space but is more expensive (Blu-ray) or the other way around (HD-DVD).
